HISTORY OF GAS COOKTOPS

Gas stoves were developed in the early 1820s but they were isolated experiments. The patent was named after James Sharp in 1826 and was marketed by the Smith and Philips firm in 1828. In 1836, he opened his own gas stove factory.

Alexis Soyer, a reputed chef in London, converted his kitchen to use piped gas which he argued was cheaper and its supply could be turned off when not in use. This move by Soyer became a significant thing in the acceptance of gas stoves.

In 1851 at the World Fair in London, a gas stove was demonstrated.

However, it took about 30 years to be commercialized in England. It was only in the early 20th century when gas stoves became widespread in the United States and European continents.

Today, they are traditionally used by most households around the world. However, due to the advent of technology, an induction cooker has come along. It is important to know the advantages and disadvantages of a gas cooktop to understand their differences.

PROS OF THE GAS COOKTOP

Using gas cooktops has the following benefits and advantages:

  • No power loss
    • One of the most obvious advantages of gas cooktops versus induction cooking is there’s no power loss. Even when the electricity goes out, cooking meals for the whole family won’t be disrupted.
  • Lower Heat Emission
    • Gas cooktops remain cooler in the kitchen. The heat immediately disperses once the gas stove is turned off. Unlike induction cooking which distributes heat around the appliance, gas cooktops don’t waste heat that enters the air around the stove top.

Induction cooking was first patented during the early 1900s.

Instead of thermal conduction through flames, induction cooking heats a cooking device by magnetic induction through electricity.

It works by having a coil of copper wire placed under the cooking pot and having alternating electric currents that pass through the copper wire.

Because of this structure, special cooking pots and pans made of ferromagnetic metal like stainless steel or cast iron must be used.

Induction cooking has the following advantages:

  • Cannot use if you have a pacemaker 
    • Obviously, a very big con if you have this device fitted.
